I Freaking Love College
Today, as I watched the class of 2017 at my old high school graduate, I realized just how happy I was to be in college. I didn’t miss anything really from high school. I was so excited for what was in store for these people. I wanted to tell each and every kid going on to college how awesome it was going to be.
College gave me a chance to try something different with my academics. New ways of studying, having different classes everyday, more writing and discussions rather than multiple choice tests. College made me feel smart and capable at succeeding in school for the first time ever. It also gave me motivation to do well. High school was something I had to do, but I chose college all on my own. I picked my school, my classes, and paid for it all myself. I’m going to have student loans to pay off one day, so I might as well make it worth every penny.
College gave me new friends and made me realize which friends in high school were in it for the long haul. Although my university isn’t tiny, it’s not large either. In college, I smile and say hi to everyone I see. Seeing a sorority sister on my way to class brightens my day. My best friends from high school still get to experience college with me, even if we are at different schools. I know they are one text or Facetime call away.
College gave me my first taste of freedom. Moving out on my own was an adjustment, but thanks to everything I’ve already listed, I felt right at home.
The world I knew became bigger when I went to college. I found that there was more to life than being popular or knowing the most people at school. I met people who cared about more than who was hooking up with who and what party everyone was going to that night. I found people who were beautiful inside and out, showed peace and kindness to anyone they could, and inspire me everyday. I wouldn’t know any of this if it hadn’t been for college.
So, to the Classes of 2017 everywhere out there, congratulations. This chapter of your life is coming to an end, but don’t be at all scared, these next four years are going to be incredible no matter where you go. College will teach you lessons and open up doors you never expected.
